FOOTBALL: Taylor Expected To Bring Florida Speed To Ferris

The state of Florida has been a fertile recruiting ground for Ferris State University this year as the Bulldogs have signed football talent Ryan Taylor of Bradenton. Taylor, at 5-foot-7 and 165 pounds is a talented slot receiver with speed and athleticism.

He should fit in nicely with the Bulldogs to bring skill to the perimeter of the FSU offense. He caught 49 passes for 643 yards in 2011 with four touchdowns. He picked up a number of honors for his play on the gridiron.

Taylor played on one of the top teams in the nation entering the 2011 season. The Bulldogs hope that he will fit in nicely with Ferris' game plan for the future.

FOOTBALL: Csonka Signing Has Ferris Excited

Ferris State University signed a familiar name with the addition of Florida-based Curtis Csonka, an offensive lineman with a name familiar to many fans of professional football. It is the name that belongs to the legendary Larry Csonka.

Head coach Tony Annese and his staff are working their contacts in Florida hard to come up with some big-time talent prospects to bring here to Michigan to play college football. He hails from Palm City, Fla. and prepped at Jensen Beach.

He was selected to participate in the Nike South Florida All-star Football Game. Has has garnered a number of accolades during his prep career as the 6-foot-3, 265 pound offensive lineman prepares to bring his talents from Florida to Michigan.

Offensive line play will be critical and the coaching staff is working hard to put the building blocks in place for the future with the signing of a student-athlete like Csonka from a football hotbed like Florida.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: No. 25 Ferris Drops Tough 66-56 Decision To No. 5 Ashland

Ferris State University, ranked 25th in the country came out and competed hard in its matchup this afternoon (Feb. 11) in Big Rapids against Ashland University, ranked fifth in the nation.

The Bulldogs competed hard and got a taste of the kind of physical play that a top-10 team like Ashland offers. At times, the Bulldogs really matched up well with the physical play. Christina Branch totaled nine points and six rebounds as she battled the Ashland big players inside. Sarah DeShone led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points and four rebounds. Nikki Arner had seven points and Ashley Rando came off the bench to drop in eight points.

Hats off to the Eagles with one of the best players in all of Division II in Kari Daugherty, who put up 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Jena Stutzman added 21 points.

The Bulldogs competed in a game that was physical and tough and came up just a bit short as the Eagles hit some free throws down the stretch to make the game maybe look not quite as close as it was in reality.

Ashland is a legit top-10 team in Division II.

Winter workouts and spring ball are where you prepare yourself to win championships in a Division II league as tougher as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Ferris State University's new coaching staff, led by head man Tony Annese, is asking the student-athletes to put in the work it will take to win in Fall 2012 and beyond.

When most people are still asleep, at 5 and 6 in the morning, the Bulldog football players are grinding away on their winter workouts to be ready to go for the start of spring practice.

The temptation will be great for Ferris State University's women's basketball team, now ranked 25th in the nation in NCAA Division II.

The Bulldogs (15-4) know that fifth-ranked Ashland University (20-1) will be ready to take on Ferris Saturday in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams from the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Top 25 Poll.

Don't expect Ferris and standout guard Sarah DeShone to overlook one of the better teams in the conference this season, Lake Erie College, on Thursday evening. It's highly unlikely the Bulldogs will fall into this trap. The Storm is 15-5 overall and 9-4 in the GLIAC. Ferris leads the North Division at 12-1 while Ashland leads the South Division at 14-0.

Ferris has to be ready on Thursday. Ashland can and will have to wait.

HOCKEY: Highlights From Ferris' 3-1 Win Over Northern Michigan

This was a huge win for the Ferris State University hockey team to head up to Northern Michigan University and grind out a victory in the Saturday evening contest at the Berry Events Center in Marquette.

Ferris needed the three points badly and got them to move into sole possession of first place (albeit with an ever-so-slim two point lead at 41-39 over Western Michigan University.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Bulldogs Continue To Perform Well, To The Surprise Of Some

Ferris State University's men's basketball team's success has been a surprise to some as the Bulldogs hold onto first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division.

The Bulldogs have retooled after some key graduation losses from last season. Some might have thought that Ferris would have a "rebuilding" year, but that has not been the case. Veterans have stepped up and newcomers have filled some spots. Dontae Molden, Jerrell Sanders and Daniel Sutherlin have been tremendous leaders on the court for the Bulldogs.

Molden has really taken on a major leadership role as he has continued to add to his game. He is a leader, a defender, a set-up man and now, a shooter.

Sanders has bounced back from last year's season-ending injury and Sutherlin continues his consistent play on the hardwood.

The team has a big test Saturday against Saginaw Valley State University. Ferris needs a win in the worst way to maintain its first-place position and protect its house: Jim Wink Arena.

It's amazing to see the depth that Ferris State University has been able to recruit and develop during the last couple of seasons.

That depth is paying off these days. I had a chance to ask sophomores Nikki Arner and Sarah DeShone about that depth. Both couldn't hide their smiles as they talked about all of the good players who are members of the team.During games head coach Tracey Dorow has the ability to go deep into her bench and expect nothing but high level results. Arner and DeShone, a pair of starters, talked about how they're pushed in practice and how good they know players who come in off the bench are in reality.

Ferris has struck gold with recent recruiting classes and consecutive strong recruiting classes is where you can build the kind of depth that largely defines championship teams.

Coach Dorow also talked about the leadership of the seniors to drive the team to get better during the off season. Lindsey Pettit, Tricia Principe and Kelsey DeNoyelles have been through the GLIAC battles and now have a lot of help with the emergence of the last three recruiting classes.

Recruiting is not always an exact science, but Ferris State University has a steal with one of its recruits, according to a head coach who might know. Defensive end Brock LaVergne, of Alcona, could be a pleasant surprise for the Bulldogs on the gridiron in the future.

"It's very exciting and I'm happy for Brock," said LaVergne's coach at Alcona, Dave Schneider. "He's one of those kids who does everything he's ever been asked to do. He'll work harder than anyone else. The kid is going to be successful. He comes from a great family. He's a quality young man and recruiters are looking for character guys. Ferris is stealing one here."

The 6-foot-6, 225 pound defensive end has a wealth of potential and the Bulldogs hope to see it come to reality.

Here are the biographical sketches on the Ferris State University football recruits who were announced on Wednesday afternoon as part of National Signing Day.

The new coaching staff of head man Tony Annese went to work in very short period of time to put together a class that looks very strong on paper. The Bulldogs had success locally with the recruitment of Morley Stanwood's Tyler Hanks, Central Montcalm's Tyler James and McBain's Hunter Thompson. The staff had a strong group of recruits out of both the Grand Rapids and Muskegon areas - true prep football hotbeds that Annese's staff knows quite well.

Ferris signed recruits at nearly all positions and Annese is not closing the door on some of the kids possibly coming in and playing right away. With a new staff in place, the competition should be as fierce as ever as the veterans will work to solidify their spots while the freshmen and junior college signees will come in and compete for those spots on the depth chart.

The Grand Rapids Press is reporting that two-time junior college All-American offensive lineman Carlin Landingham leads a group of former Raiders headed to Big Rapids. A junior college player of this caliber is typically expected to come in and play right away. The Bulldogs will hope that is true for an experienced newcomer. He is expected to be joined by sophomores Marcus Cribbs, Justin Glover and Travis Mikita all appear to be headed to play for the crimson and gold.

"I'm extremely happy to go to Ferris, and coach Annese played a big part in me going there," said Landingham, a 6-foot-4, 295 offensive lineman. "I took a visit up there and I liked the campus, the city and the students. Although it didn't really affect me that much, I'm sad that the football program at GRCC is done, but I am happy to go somewhere to play football."

Head coach Tracey Dorow credited the senior leadership of her squad, particularly in the off season, for much of the success being experienced this year.

Senior leaders Tricia Principe, Kelsey DeNoyelles and Lindsey Pettit have been a strong presence both on and off the hardwood. After the team's 58-50 win over Grand Valley State University in Big Rapids, Dorow was asked about her team's steady improvement this season and the confidence it has gained with its play. She immediately credited the senior leadership.

"I would like to credit the seniors because they have been through a lot the last three years and really demanded a lot of our underclassmen this summer as far as expecting them to work hard, expecting them to work hard when they're home and expecting them to come back and spend time with us on campus," Dorow said. "I think they kept in touch this summer and that hasn't always happened in the past. They've had a different level of accountability."

That accountability is showing through in the form of a confident and united team.

Younger players in the program like Sarah DeShone, Nikki Arner, Christina Branch, Hannah Hoffman, Ashley Rando and others continue to play with more and more confidence.The freshmen, sophomores, juniors (Katy Fox and Kylie Muntz) are playing solid and confident basketball.

Head coach Tracey Dorow watched her team battle it out in a typical rivalry game between her Ferris State University Bulldogs and the archrival Lakers of Grand Valley State University.

Both teams competed hard, and right down until the end, before the Bulldogs were able to grind out a 58-50 victory inside of Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids.

"I thought Grand Valley did a really good job of being physical with us and kind of took us out of our rhythm," Dorow said. "We didn't shoot the ball as well as we normally do. I thought we had a great week of practices and our performance was a little disappointing in one way but we can't be disappointed since we came away with a win."

Both teams were strong and physical throughout the contest as the Bulldogs had to find ways to manufacture points against an aggressive and tough GVSU defense.

Ferris shot 34 percent from the floor while Grand Valley shot 31 percent from the field.

It was a hard-fought battle ... as most of them are when Ferris State University takes on Grand Valley State University in men's college basketball.

Saturday was no different as the Bulldogs Kenny Brown and Dontae Molden each scored 18 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 65-57 win over the Lakers in Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were superb as they managed to get the Lakers out of a rhythm for much of the game, create turnovers and get off to the races with 17 points off turnovers. The fastbreak was off and running for Ferris as Jerrell Sanders (11 points) and Daniel Sutherlin (14 points) were high flying to the rim for some spectacular dunks that brought the crowd to its feet numerous times. But, again, it all started with some tenacious and harassing defense from the Bulldogs. Ferris was solid against some of the Lakers star players like James Thomas, Nick Waddell, Breland Hogan and others. You're not always going to shut down top players, but you can make life tough on them.

Grand Valley made a late run, but the Bulldogs regained their composure thanks to some solid leadership from the backcourt from Brown and Molden. This was a big win for the Bulldogs as Ferris vaulted into first place thanks to some help from Hillsdale College (which defeated Michigan Tech University).

Ferris State University needed to win, and an ugly win beats a pretty loss any day of the week for coaches at any level.

The Bulldogs managed to grind out a 58-50 win over rival Grand Valley in Jim Wink Arena on Saturday afternoon to improve to 13-4 overall and 10-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They got the win by doing the work needed on defense and on the backboards against the Lakers.

Sarah DeShone, a sophomore guard who referenced the team's commitment to defense in its practices, led the offensive effort as she dropped in a game-high 21 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the floor and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. The only other Bulldog player to score in double digits was senior guard Tricia Principe, who added 13 points on 9-of-10 at the free throw line and 2-of-7 from the floor.

The Bulldogs played some tough defense as it held the Lakers to just 26.1 percent shooting in the second half and 31.1 for the game. The lone offensive bright spot for an injury-decimated Grand Valley team was Briauna Taylor who scored 20 points. She had her moments, but the Bulldogs were able to hold the rest of the team mostly in check as the next highest scorer was Kara Crawford with nine.

It was a big win for the Bulldogs to maintain a strong edge in first place in the GLIAC North Division standings.

Freshman defenseman Simon Denis was named the CCHA Gladiator Defenseman of the Week for his efforts against the Buckeyes. He had a career-best two assists in each of the Bulldogs games (a 4-3 win and a 3-3 tie with a shootout victory) and was a true tough defender with his blocked shots to help out the Ferris goaltenders.

The poll is stacked with Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals - indicative of a tough race the Bulldogs will have as they hit the stretch run of this season. It is always one of the most difficult trips of the season, but Ferris State University had a big weekend as the women's basketball team scored road victories over Michigan Tech University on Thursday, 68-65, and Northern Michigan University on Saturday, 78-71.

Both wins were a challenge as the Bulldogs faced two of the better teams, both well-coached teams, in their respective backyards.

With the wins, Ferris improved to 12-4 overall and 9-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as it looks ahead to a home weekend battle with rival Grand Valley State University.

Freshman center Christina Branch led the Bulldogs with 23 points and nine rebounds in the Saturday victory over the Wildcats. Sarah DeShone added 18 and Nikki Arner totaled 13. Against Tech, on Thursday, senior captain Tricia Principe totaled 25 points as she knocked down 5-of-8 3-pointers. Kelsey DeNoyelles, a senior guard, added 11 while DeShone scored 10.

The Bulldogs had a number of solid performances in the meet led by senior All-American distance runner Tina Muir, who placed second in the mile run and hit the NCAA Division II National Provisional Qualification time as she clocked in at 5:00.19. FOOTBALL: Assistant Coaches Are The Backbone Of A Program's Success

If Ferris State University is successful, in the future, it won't be just due to the efforts of new head coach Tony Annese.

Annese will be taking the lead, but he better than anyone else knows he will need a capable staff of assistant coaches who will take on the task of a lot of the day-to-day and hands-on work that assistant coaches across the country do without sometimes getting recognition. In other words, they do the necessary dirty work that keeps a program running smoothly and, hopefully, successfully.

Coach Annese recently announced the hiring of his first four assistant coaches: Ryan Hodges, a former Ferris cornerback during his playing days, Ryan Oshnock, a former Wayne State University player; Ryan Brady, a former Grand Valley State University player and assistant coach; and Rob Zeitman, who has been coaching most recently at Northview High School in Grand Rapids but has his share of college coaching experience. This has the makings of an excellent, hard-working staff. All of these new assistants have experience working for Annese and understands what he will be trying to do in Big Rapids.

Assistant coaches are vital to the success in the program and an investment in good assistant coaches is like an investment in gold. It's virtually priceless.

Ferris State University's stock is on the rise as it continues to play strong basketball in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Bulldogs had big games from Sarah DeShone (18 points), Kelsey DeNoyelles (14 points), Nikki Arner (12 points) and Kylie Muntz (11 points) en route to a decisive 78-44 win over Northwood University on Saturday afternoon in Big Rapids.

The balanced scoring was tremendous. The Bulldogs' defensive effort was superb as it held the Timberwolves to just 26.5-percent shooting from the floor, 20 percent from the three-point line and got 23 turnovers out of Northwood.

In short, Ferris looked the part of a team that currently is in first place in the GLIAC North Division (granted, with a lot of basketball left to be played). The good news could be that the Bulldogs know they can play better and that they expect to play better as this season continues. The team, right now, is scratching the surface of a potential that looks more and more tremendous as the season progresses.

The best is yet to come, but so too are more challenges ahead with talented and hungry competition ready to take a shot at knocking down the Bulldogs.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Enjoys Thrilling Win Over Northwood

We pretty much knew what to expect as Ferris State University hosted Northwood University in men's college basketball action.

What we got was something of a thriller as NU's Cameron Joyce hit a buzzer-beating layup at the end of regulation to force overtime. However, in the extra session, the Bulldogs stepped it up with a big defensive stop followed by a Daniel Sutherlin three-point play that lifted Ferris to a 74-69 win in Jim Wink Arena.

This was a big win for head coach Bill Sall and his Bulldogs as they bounced back from a disappointing road loss last weekend at Saginaw Valley State University.

The Bulldogs used a dynamite performance by Kenny Brown - who has played well in both games this season against Northwood - who had 25 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, including 4-of-9 from outside the three-point arc. Sutherlin scored 17 points with nine rebounds, Jerrell Sanders had a 15-point effort along with seven rebounds while Dontae Molden totaled 11 points and six rebounds.

It was a gutsy win by the Bulldogs who looked like they could be in trouble when Northwood made a run late in regulation and took a lead. Ferris bounced back before the game eventually went into overtime.

This was a big win for Ferris as it prepares for a HUGE trip to the Upper Peninsula for battles against Michigan Tech University, the team it is tied with for first place, and Northern Michigan University, another very solid team that will play well at home.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Defense Struggles In Saturday Loss To Saginaw Valley

Ferris State University had a tough defensive night on Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University. And, it was the host Cardinals who made the Bulldogs pay.

The Cardinals shot 82.4 percent from the floor in the second half (14-of-17) en route to a 79-59 win over the visiting Bulldogs in O'Neill Arena. It was a staggering number for a team to shoot from the floor in a GLIAC game.

Kenny Brown scored 23 points for the Bulldogs, but no other Ferris player scored in double digits as Drew Lehman scored eight points and Jerrell Sanders added seven.

As a team, Ferris connected on just 36.4 percent of its shots from the field in a tough road GLIAC showing. It's a challenge to get wins on the road anywhere in the GLIAC and the Bulldogs desperately wanted to steal one at SVSU. Ferris now is 8-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

The Bulldogs are off until Saturday when they host Northwood University in Big Rapids. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Facing off against the ninth-ranked team in the nation, in a two-game home series in Big Rapids, Ferris State University needed to get some momentum going.

Boy did the team ever get that momentum back as the 17th-ranked Bulldogs pulled off back-to-back wins over Colgate University by scores of 4-3 and 3-1 in Ewigleben Ice Arena. Ferris is now 13-8-1 overall on the season as it prepares to resume Central Collegiate Hockey Association play this upcoming weekend when it hosts the University of Alaska on Friday and Saturday with both games scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.

Jordie Johnston and Travis Ouellette are leading the team in scoring with 14 points apiece. Kyle Bonis and Chad Billins each have 12 points and Matthew Kirzinger has 11. That balanced scoring can make it difficult to key in on one player or one line. The Bulldogs will attempt to maintain that balanced scoring as it gets ready for more league games coming up in what is still a wild CCHA race toward Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Ferris State University held onto first place in the GLIAC with a pair of road wins over the weekend at Lake Superior State University and Saginaw Valley State University.

The Bulldogs improve to 6-1 in league play as they held maintained a lead in first place. Ferris improved to 8-4 overall. A young team, the the Bulldogs continue to improve as the season progresses.

Biggest of all, road wins in the GLIAC are great no matter where you get them. Ferris has had some tough times at both Lake Superior and Saginaw Valley over the years so these are good wins. Sarah DeShone helped cap a great weekend for the Bulldogs with 31 points in the 66-48 win over the Cardinals on Saturday.Kylie Muntz, Nikki Arner and Christina Branch each scored 12 points as Ferris claimed a 65-56 win over the Lakers last Thursday. DeShone scored 10 in the win.

The Bulldogs step back out of conference play to host Urbana (Ohio) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Big Rapids. Ferris needs to keep the momentum going because the return to league play commences Saturday when Northwood University rolls into Big Rapids.

Recruiting is an ongoing process for most college coaching staffs. Ferris State University secured a significant commitment from Gerald Mayhew, playing for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL.

Expect the 5-foot-8 Mayhew to bring his talents to Ferris after he is done with his career in Cedar Rapids. Mayhew, a native of Wyandotte, is leading the team with 12 goals and ranks second in scoring with eight points (he also has six assists).

Other Ferris commitments include Chad McDonald, of the Des Moines Buccaneers; Connor Schmidt, of the Buccaneers; Dakota Klecha, of the Muskegon Lumberjacks; Ken Babinski, of the Omaha Lancers; and Ryan Lowney, of the Youngstown Phantoms.

The Bulldogs have had a number of recruiting success stories over the years having previously secured commitments from current players like defenseman Chad Billins, goaltender C.J. Motte, forward Eric Alexander, defenseman Brett Wysopal and others.

Strangely enough for me, I had just my first two opportunities of the season to see the Ferris State University women's basketball team in action as they competed against the University of Indianapolis, on Friday, and St. Joseph's College on Saturday.

The Bulldogs knew they had a couple of tough tests on their hands against the Greyhounds and the Pumas. Unfortunately for Ferris, the team suffered a pair of losses to the regional opponents.

It was a tough pair of games as Ferris struggled turning the basketball over in both games and had a difficult time finding consistency shooting the basketball. The Bulldogs had fairly consistent play from sophomore guard Sarah DeShone and had some strong moments from freshman center Christina Branch. Branch had 16 points and 17 rebounds against the Pumas on Saturday. Tricia Principe, a senior guard, didn't shoot as well as she normally does from the field and the 3-point arc, but was able to get to the free throw line to help her team get on the scoreboard. DeShone had 16 while Principe had 18 against St. Joseph's.

The Bulldogs have more depth this year and that should pay off as the team's chemistry comes to better and it can cut down on the turnovers.

One thing is clear: The future is bright in this program. Strengthened by strong sophomore and freshmen classes, Ferris is headed toward big things in the years to come.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Red-Hot Indianapolis Team Stops Bulldogs

The University of Indianapolis proved to be a good team as it came to Big Rapids on Friday afternoon to face Ferris State University on the hardwood.

The game was a good test for the Bulldogs who will need these kinds of regional games to prepare them for what is ahead in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The level of play that the Greyhounds brought to the court is pretty much what Ferris can expect on most nights in the GLIAC (some nights it will be an even higher level of competition).

Indianapolis had a guard-oriented scoring attack that challenged the defense of the Ferris backcourt. The Greyhounds had decent size inside as well with 6-9 and 6-7 players logging a good number of minutes on the hardwood. The Bulldogs have been playing without the injured Jim Boylan, a 6-9 center, but other players have stepped up as guys like Jerrell Sanders and Daniel Sutherlin have picked up their work on the boards to solidify the rebounding and shot blocking.

As the Bulldogs look ahead to road tests next week at Lake Superior State and Saginaw Valley State, the team will need to put all phases together and come up with the balanced, consistent scoring it will need to win road games in the GLIAC - not to mention the defense and rebounding that is necessity to win on the road in the league.

Ferris must continue to get strong with its consistent defense effort to challenge the shooters and deny dribble penetration as much as possible. Interior defense and rebounding also will be important from here on out for the Bulldogs.

Indianapolis was an appetizer. Regional games (out of conference) are important, but the real way for a team to control its destiny is to handle its business in the conference.

FOOTBALL: Annese Knows The Hard Work Is Ahead For Ferris Program

New Ferris State University head football coach Tony Annese has a lot of respect for the history of the Bulldog football program - even as he has been hired to push it ahead to greater heights.

It looks like Coach Annese is ready to put his stamp on a Ferris program that has players ready to climb up the ranks of the GLIAC and battle it out with traditional league powerhouses like Grand Valley State University and others. Having such a strong history in West Michigan, Annese has been able to follow the history of the Ferris program and envision future success for Bulldog football.

"I'm excited and humbled about the opportunity to coach Division II football at Ferris," Annese said. "There is a tremendous football tradition at FSU and this is a great chance to follow in the footsteps of some outstanding coaches and teams that have been here in the past. We have a lot of work in front of us, but I'm looking forward to developing many new relationships and building opportunities to be successful."

The hard work is indeed ahead for Annese. He will have to begin evaluating the program, hire a staff, jump right into recruiting and look ahead to spring practice.

This is the honeymoon, and it's special and fun, but Annese is ready to get to work.

One thing right off the bat that looks promising as Ferris State University has hired Grand Rapids Community College head football coach Tony Annese could be recruiting.

Annese has strong West Michigan ties from his days as a high school coach to the work that he has done to turn GRCC into a national power on the junior college level. Like many who have followed Bulldog football for a number of years, I hope that Annese can use those relationships he has with Grand Rapids-area and Muskegon-area coaches to add to Ferris' recruiting prowess.

The Bulldogs need to win recruiting battles in West Michigan, and - yes - that does mean winning some head-to-head recruiting battles against Grand Valley State University, and others. If the Bulldogs can win a high percentage of recruiting battles in West Michigan, that alone makes Ferris a top-flight GLIAC program. Yes, the high school football in West Michigan is indeed THAT GOOD.

I look forward to Coach Annese renewing his relationships with West Michigan coaches, but doing it now in Ferris' crimson and gold colors.

They did it, again - upsetting a nationally-ranked team.

Ferris State University stepped its game up and met the challenge presented by a Michigan Tech University team that came to Big Rapids ranked seventh in the nation in Division II, but left with a loss as it heads down to Allendale to face Grand Valley State University.

The Bulldogs were sharp en route to a 71-56 win over the visiting Huskies. Sarah DeShone was superb once again for Ferris as she scored a game-high 24 points in the victory. Christina Branch had 13, Nikki Arner had 11 and Tricia Principe added 10 as the Ferris starting lineup posted a strong effort. DeShone was the key as she hit 10-of-16 shots and from the field, including 2-of-4 from outside of the 3-point arc.

The win was a big one for Ferris, but it won't mean as much if the Bulldogs can't follow it up with a win Monday night at 6 p.m. against Northern Michigan University in Big Rapids.

Ferris State University knew that Michigan Tech was going to be a tough opponent coming into Sunday's game and the Huskies proved to be just that with a 77-64 win in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs had a tough time handling big man Ali Haidar inside as he posted a double-double performance with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the win. MTU also had good guard play to assist its cause as the program improved to 4-0 in the league. Tech shot an unbelievable 70 percent from the field in the victory and that is virtually impossible to do against a typical Ferris defensive effort.

The Bulldogs shot just 37 percent from the floor and that was not enough against a sizzling Michigan Tech squad that was on its game.

Ferris, led by standout forward Jerrell Sanders has no time to worry about that loss with Northern Michigan University coming to Big Rapids for a Monday night game in Wink Arena at 8 p.m. NMU is coming in off a 67-60 loss at Grand Valley State University on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs badly need a win to hang tough in the early North Division GLIAC race.

FOOTBALL: New Coach Will Face High Expectations

Ferris State University is in the midst of a search for its next football coach and it will mark the dawn of a new era on the gridiron.

The pressure will be greater as expectations will be much higher since Ferris and long-time head coach Jeff Pierce parted ways.

The Division II football world has offered a few whispers about who will become the next head coach. There are a few well-known names in Michigan that are involved in the speculation and there will be some names that are perhaps not so well known that will emerge.

One advantage the next coach will have is that Ferris is a school held in high regard by a lot of communities around the state where high school football is strong. One of the primary tasks of the new coach will be to build (or perhaps strengthen) bonds in those recruiting hotbeds to bring that talent to Ferris to play football.

You can bet that whoever becomes the new coach that the individual will be ready to go to work - he better be ready. The opportunity is great, but so too will be the expectations.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris' Hot Start To Season Will Be Tested

Head coach Bill Sall's Ferris State University squad knows the task is tough this weekend as it prepares to face a very good Michigan Tech University team and a Northern Michigan University squad that could be on the rise in the conference.

The Bulldogs are off to a hot start this season at 3-0 in league play. But, the Huskies also are 3-0 as they visit Big Rapids on Sunday.

The GLIAC race is tough with as many as seven (possibly eight teams) legitimately feeling that they can win the championship.

Northern comes in at .500 overall and 2-1 in the league. The Wildcats continue to add talented pieces to the puzzle as they are still (relatively speaking) in the beginning of a new era in program history.

Both battles will be good tests for Ferris, led by the hot shooting of guard Kenny Brown, the versatile play of Daniel Sutherlin and Jerrell Sanders and the contributions of an excellent freshman class featuring the likes of Drew Lehman and Dietrich Lever. While the risk is high the reward is potentially great if Ferris can put together a pair of wins coming off of exam week on campus.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Big Weekend To Show Progress So Far

Ferris State University has a big opportunity coming up this weekend when it hosts Upper Peninsula schools Michigan Tech University and Northern Michigan University on Sunday and Monday in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs have enjoyed a solid degree of success with good health and the influx of talented newcomers, such as center Christina Branch. Branch is averaging more than seven points and seven-plus rebounds per contest for Ferris. Sophomore guard Sarah DeShone continues to improve and is averaging 15.2 points to lead the squad. Senior guard Tricia Principe continues to be a dependable scoring and perimeter shooting threat while talented and versatile sophomore forward Nikki Arner is showing her star potential more and more with each game.

Tech will be a good test coming in as a nationally-ranked team with talented players all over the court. The Huskies are a well-coached team that is accustomed to success. Ferris will be tested in a major way on Sunday. This game will give the Bulldogs a good feel for where they stack up as the league season really gets going. Monday, Ferris is home against Northern in what should be another competitive game. The Wildcats are an eyelash below .500, but can play with anyone in the conference.

Nothing can be taken for granted.

Ferris State University women's basketball sophomore guard Sarah DeShone continues to shine in her second season in the crimson and gold colors.

DeShone just earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball North Division Player of the Week honors for her efforts on the hardwood as she continues to emerge as a more-than-capable player and a team leader out of the backcourt for the Bulldogs.

She averaged 15.5 points last weekend as the Bulldogs split a pair of contests down in Ohio as Ferris dropped a contest to Tiffin University, but bounced back to earn a victory over Ohio Dominican University.

HOCKEY: CCHA Looking Tough Early

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association is looking pretty tough and hardly the picture of a team that is a couple of years away from pretty much disappearing off the national college hockey scene.

The league is looking strong with Ohio State University as the current leader with 29 points followed by Ferris State University's opponent this weekend, the University of Notre Dame, which has 24 points. Western Michigan University, on the strength of a weekend sweep of the Bulldogs now has 22 points, fourth-place Lake Superior State University has 20 points and fifth-place Ferris has 19 points.

Michigan State University is sixth while perennial league powers Miami University and the University of Michigan are struggling right now in the lower division of the CCHA.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LaCross Joins Bulldog Roster As A Talented Frontcourt Player

April LaCross was signed by Ferris State University during the early-signing period. LaCross, a 6-foot forward from Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids, joins a Ferris recruiting class that includes Alexis Miller of Caledonia High School.

LaCross was a first team All-Ottawa Kent Black Division player last season as she averaged 10.8 points, 4.5 assists, 3.9 steals and 3.6 rebounds. She helped lead Forest Hills Central to a record of 21-3 overall and a district championship.

"April is a versatile player who knows the game and has a soft shooting touch," said Ferris women's baskeball head coach Tracey Dorow. "We are eager to see April in a Bulldog uniform and are confident she will feel right at home in our program."

Ferris State University was pleased to sign 5-7 guard Alexis Miller of Caledonia High School. Miller is one of the top guards coming out of the Grand Rapids area this year.

Miller, who averaged 17 points per game last season for Caledonia, which finished 13-8. She also averaged four assists, three rebounds and two steals.

"Lexi has developed into one of the best point guards in the state of Michigan and we're thrilled she has chosen to continue her career at Ferris," said head women's basketball coach Tracey Dorow. "She's extremely quick with the ball and finds a way to setup her teammates for success.

"Additonally, she's a feisty defender and a fierce competitor who we expect will make an immediate impact in our program," she added.

She will be a great addition to the roster this season.

FOOTBALL: Pierce Not Retained As Ferris Head Coach

Ferris State University Athletics Director Perk Weisenburger announced today that Jeff Pierce will not be retained as head football coach, ending a 17-year run leading the Bulldog football program.

"After evaluating our program over the past two seasons, it became apparent that it is time for a change," Weisenburger said. "In order to promote the future success of our football program, new leadership is needed. Therefore, as of Dec. 1, Jeff Pierce will no longer serve as head football coach at Ferris State University and a search for his successor will begin immediately.

"Regretfully, and with the utmost respect for the time and effort Jeff has devoted to our program, this action is needed at this point in time. Our efforts remain focused on building the Bulldogs into a championship contending football program. We appreciate the service, commitment and dedication that Jeff, his family and his coaching staffs have provided to Ferris over the years," he added.

Pierce established firm roots with the Bulldogs after graduating from Sault Ste. Marie (Mich.) High School in 1974. He was a Bulldog defensive back from 1974-77 and started his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ferris in 1983 under Nick Coso. He later coached the linebackers under Dan Underwood and continued on with Keith Otterbein's staff in 1986 before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 1988.

Pierce took over the Bulldog program in 1995 after the departure of Otterbein. The Bulldogs haven't reached the playoffs since 1996 and claimed the last of three league titles won or shared under Pierce's direction in 1999. FSU's six wins this season represented their most victories since 2008 and came on the heels of back-to-back losing seasons in 2009 and 2010. Ferris won only one game in 2009 (1-10) and followed it up with a 5-6 mark in 2010 (lost final five games) along with a 6-5 record in 2011 (lost four of last six games).

Additionally, Ferris also has struggled against various Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) division rivals. The Bulldogs haven't beat archrival Grand Valley State since 1999 and this year's setback at Michigan Tech was Ferris' ninth consecutive loss to the Huskies. Ferris has finished among the top three teams in the conference only once in the last 10 years and is 23-41 versus in-state league teams on the field in the last 10 seasons, including a combined 3-16 versus two of the division's premier programs in GVSU and Saginaw Valley State* (includes two games that were later changed to forfeit wins for the Bulldogs).

Pierce served for 12 years as a Bulldog assistant coach, including the final seven as defensive coordinator, before being tabbed as the school's 12th head coach and he guided the Bulldogs to NCAA Division II Playoff appearances in each of his first two campaigns while finishing with a 102-85 (.545) overall record. He made the most of his initial head coaching opportunity during his first season in 1995 when he led the Bulldogs at that time to an unprecedented fourth consecutive GLIAC title with a second-straight undefeated regular-season and a school-best semifinal appearance in the NCAA-II Playoffs while earning GLIAC Coach of the Year honors.

A national search for a successor will begin immediately, according to Weisenburger. Assistant Coach Chris Boden will serve as the interim head coach until a successor is named.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Off To Good Start ... Tougher Competition Is Ahead

Ferris State University's women's basketball team is off to a good start to the 2011-12 season with some non-league victories.

But, the competition gets a lot stiffer for head coach Tracey Dorow's team - beginning Thursday evening on the road in Ohio at Tiffin University.

Sophomore guard Sarah DeShone (pictured), who missed some games late last season, is making up for lost time as she is off to a hot start this season. DeShone is leading the team in scoring at 15.7. Her potential is virtually unlimited and she is paying some major dividends on a team that is mostly balanced in its scoring attack.

Tricia Principe and Nikki Arner are both averaging 9.7 points for the Bulldogs. Veteran guard/forward Lindsey Pettit and freshman center Christina Branch are off to good starts as well.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Earns Important Regional Win

Don't believe that some of these early-season non-conference games are not all that important ... they are very important.

Ferris State University, this past Saturday, earned a key 70-65 decision over Wisconsin-Parkside in a game played in Big Rapids at Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs of head coach Bill Sall need to earn their regional victories when they can get them. Obviously, the league games will be important when GLIAC play begins on Thursday, but these games against schools from the GLVC can pay off for Ferris if it performs well in league play.

There is, of course, a lot of work ahead for the Bulldogs and many other teams with the season still in its infancy. But, a good regional win is still a good regional win. Ferris, led by the likes of guard Kenny Brown (pictured) will definitely take it.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Former Bulldog Clarke Carrying On Tradition As Coach Of Owens

Former Ferris State University men's basketball player and student assistant coach David Clarke was hired this summer as the head men's basketball coach at junior-college power Owens Community College of Ohio.

“I really believe that Owens Community College men’s basketball is one of the best intercollegiate programs in the country,” Clarke said. “I am really looking forward to representing Owens Community College and serving as Head Coach of the Express men’s basketball program.”

Clarke is off to a good start and coached his team to a big victory over Grand Rapids Community College in a return to Michigan on Nov. 18.

If the win over GRCC is any indication, an 81-57 win that lifted the nationally-ranked team to 6-0 on the season.

HOCKEY: Ferris Still Standing Strong In National Polls

Ferris State University's hockey team continues to ride high in the national rankings at sixth in the three major Division I polls: the U.S. College Hockey Online, Inside College Hockey.com and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine.

The Bulldogs of 20th-year head coach Bob Daniels are off to a solid start at 9-2-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

This weekend the Bulldogs are headed out west - WAY OUT WEST - to Fairbanks, Alaska to take on the University of Alaska Nanooks. The games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday with start times slated for 11:05 p.m. both nights.

FOOTBALL: Michigan Tech 41, Ferris 14

HOUGHTON - It was a rough afternoon of football all the way around for Ferris State University as it dropped a 41-14 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision to Michigan Tech University at Sherman Field.

The Bulldogs drop to 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the GLIAC while the Huskies improve to 6-4 overall and 5-4 in the league.

Ferris had a difficult time stopping MTU from running the football as the huskies rushed for 236 yards led by Akeem Cason, who had 117 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. As a team, MTU dominated time of possession as it held the ball for 40:21 vs. the Bulldogs who had it for 19:39.

For the Bulldogs, Mike Ryan had a big day as he made five catches for 136 yards while Tom Schneider completed 17-of-31 passes for 233 yards. Dwayne Williams (pictured) had seven carries for 14 yards and two touchdowns.

The Huskies gained a total of 447 yards vs. 274 for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs take on Northwood University at 2 p.m. next week on Senior Day in Big Rapids.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Newbies Come In And Perform Well For Bulldogs

EAST LANSING - Some members of Ferris State University's highly-touted freshman class were thrown right into the fire right off the bat on Sunday afternoon in the Breslin Center at Michigan State University.

Toledo, Ohio native Drew Lehman, a freshman guard, was inserted into the starting lineup. Lehman played 26 minutes, scored five points, shot 2-of-3 from the floor, 1-of-2 from the 3-point line, totaled four assists and had just one turnover.

Rookie guard Dietrich Lever came off the bench to play 21 minutes. The Canton native had five points on 2-of-5 shooting from the floor.

Forwards Dan Chilcote, Tyrin Wade (pictured) and Trent Messer all played for the Bulldogs in the game. Chilcote, who looked solid, was limited to seven minutes as he fouled out early in the second half. Wade, a Lansing native, played 14 minutes while Messer played 10. Chilcote scored three points while Wade and Messer each added two.

EAST LANSING - The play of Ferris State University forward Jerrell Sanders opened a lot of eyes at the Breslin Center on Sunday afternoon as the Bulldogs dropped an 85-58 decision to Michigan State University.

Sanders finished with 14 points and six rebounds as he matched a 14-point effort from teammate Daniel Sutherlin. The play of Sanders was a hot topic in the post-game press conference as a number of people asked questions about the athletic 6-6 swingman from Grand Rapids.

"You know, I think Jerrell has a lot of skill and some size and athleticism," said Ferris head coach Bill Sall. "To tell you the truth, at the beginning of the game our guys didn't have that deer in the headlights look. They came out and competed really well and I was really happy with that. Last year, we played Indiana and had a very good game as well, so he is one of those small college players that has really refined his game since he was in high school and has really become a great player."

Ferris State University forward Daniel Sutherlin was a major reason why the Bulldogs ended up playing the Spartans.

EAST LANSING - A sort of chance meeting between Ferris State University men's basketball player Daniel Sutherlin and Michigan State University Athletics Director Mark Hollis led to Sunday afternoon's exhibition contest between the Bulldogs and the Spartans.

"It's a great story, actually," Ferris head coach Bill Sall started to say. "I think the reason we are here today is from some rain at St. Ives. Mr. Hollis was out playing one of our nice courses we have over at St. Ives Golf Course right by Big Rapids. It was a rainy day, he went into the golf clubhouse area. Dan Sutherlin, who had a very good game today, is working out at St. Ives and struck up a conversation and Mr. Hollis was kind enough to say I'm looking for an exhibition game this season and low and behold he followed through. We got a call right before school started and said they would like to play us. So anyway, it helps to have players at a golf club on a rainy day in St. Ives. It was a good thing and we appreciate that Mark could help us out there."

It was a win-win situation for the Bulldogs and the Spartans.

EAST LANSING - Ferris State University competed hard for 40 minutes against Michigan State University even though the final score doesn't reflect that fight.

The Bulldogs dropped an 85-58 exhibition decision to the Spartans inside the Breslin Center on Sunday afternoon.

"I would just like to thank the Michigan State family and Coach (Tom) Izzo for allowing us to come down here," said Ferris head coach Bill Sall. "I think it was a thrill of a lifetime for the players to actually have a chance to play on Breslin's court, as well as the head coaches. We certainly enjoyed our time here today."

FOOTBALL: Frazier Shines, But Wants The Win

William Frazier had some spectacular plays on Saturday as Ferris State University took on the University of Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs suffered a 24-17 defeat at the hands of the Greyhounds at Top Taggart Field in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

"We can't go anywhere but up," Frazier said. "We just have to get this out of our head, look at the film and get better from here."

Frazier lamented the empty drives for which Ferris had great opportunities, but failed to turn them into points.

"We can get down the field on 90-yard drives and 80-yard drives and come up empty," he said. "We just have to finish drives."

Frazier finished with five catches for 95 yards ... including a 40-yard reception. He had two kick returns for 34 yards as well. Frazier was asked about his numbers, but turned it back to team.

"It's encouraging I had a big game, but at the end of the day all that matters is we have to get a "W" ... it's a hard right now," he said.

VOLLEYBALL: Ferris Continues Play Well Heading Into Weekend Set In Ohio

Ferris State University's volleyball team, ranked 11th in the nation, is heading on the road for contests on Saturday and Sunday in Ohio.

The Bulldogs of head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm are at Ohio Dominican on Saturday, Oct. 29 and then at Tiffin on Sunday, Oct. 30. Ferris wants to finish the regular season on a strong note.

Ashley Huntey, a senior outside hitter, is having an outstanding season as she leads the team with 270 kills. This is the big test that a lot of Bulldog hockey fans have been waiting on as Ferris State University, ranked sixth in the nation, heads to Yost Ice Arena to take on the University of Michigan, ranked fourth in the land.

The teams battle tonight, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and then finish off the series on Friday night in Ann Arbor at the upgraded Yost Ice Arena.

This road test will be a major one for the Bulldogs who want to get an even better gauge as to where they're at and how good they are, truly, at this early stage of the season.

The Bulldogs, led by Eric Alexander (pictured) and others, need to withstand the early charge that Michigan will no doubt throw at them strengthened by a rabid crowd of fans cheering on the Wolverines.

MIDLAND - The Ferris State University women's tennis team figured to be in for a fight in its bid for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

The competition for that championship has gotten tougher as other programs have elevated their play over the years.

The Bulldogs took fifth place at the league tournament in Midland over the weekend - an event that concluded on Sunday. Ana Jan (pictured), in No. 1 singles, and Laurence LeBlanc, in No. 4 singles, had victories. In doubles, Ferris earned all three points. The fifth-place finish was secured

Ferris State University has all the makings of a team on a mission to accomplish some big things this season on the ice.

Head coach Bob Daniels' Bulldogs, already nationally ranked, are off to a 6-0 start after sweeping No. 10 Miami over the weekend in Big Rapids. Ferris has been impressive all the way around, but its lock-down defensive efforts, led by Chad Billins (pictured) have been bolstered by top-notch goaltending and outstanding efforts by its defensemen in front of the net.

Ferris is making a strong case for a top-10 ranking with the way it has

performed through its first three sets of the season against St. Lawrence University, RPI and Miami University.

Now, the question is, will the pollsters take notice that the so-called "leftover" teams (not invited to the Big Ten, for obvious reasons, or the NCHC) can hang with anybody.

FOOTBALL: Ferris Struggles In Loss To Grand Valley

ALLENDALE - The numbers were pretty bad for Ferris State University in Saturday night's 57-10 loss to rival Grand Valley State University in the Anchor-Bone Classic.

A good-sized crowd at Lubbers Stadium had a lot to cheer about as Grand Valley scored the game's first 31 points en route to a 47-point victory.

Ferris had a chance early in the game to make it potentially a slugfest, but came up empty on a promising drive that might have tied the score at 7-7. GVSU turned that missed Ferris opportunity into another seven points and a 14-0 lead. From there, the floodgates opened as Grand Valley

poured it on big time with a totally dominating performance in all three phases of the game (offense, defense and special teams).

GVSU totaled 631 yards of total offense and quarterback Heath Parling completed 21-of-28 passes for 336 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Receiver Charles Johnson had a dominating performance with six receptions for 144 yards with two touchdowns. Greg Gay had two touchdown receptions and Jovonne Augustus had one TD grab and five receptions overall. Running back Hersey Jackson rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 8.8 yards per carry.

Ferris had 72 rushing yards on 18 carries from Tom Schneider. Schneider completed 15-of-29 passes for 156 yards and receiver Mike Ryan (pictured) had four catches for 35 yards. Ryan, on a trick play, had one TD pass for 15 yards to Schneider.

It was thorough domination and a horribly disappointing outcome. Now, Ferris has to find a way to put this setback behind it and bounce back for the stretch run of the season. The Bulldogs can't let this emotional pain derail them for the rest of the 2011 campaign.

It's time to shake this one off and gear up for the next challenge: a good University of Indianapolis team on Saturday (Oct. 29) at 2 p.m. at Top Taggart Field.

FOOTBALL: Ferris' Loss To GVSU Makes Me Wonder How Grand Valley Lost Any Games

ALLENDALE - The way Grand Valley State University played, my opinion of the Lakers being the top team in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was confirmed after its 57-10 victory over Ferris State University.

This team is good ... VERY GOOD! Taking a look at the Lakers on Saturday night makes me wonder how this squad had a three-game losing streaks where they suffered losses to Hillsdale College, 34-31; the University of Indianapolis, 34-33; and the University of Findlay, 26-20. With no disrespect intended to those teams, it's highly unlikely Grand Valley would lose to any of those squads (or anyone else in the GLIAC) the way it has played the last four weeks. Since those three losses, GVSU has scored 70, 42, 61 and 57 points in four consecutive wins.

It will be interesting to see how GVSU plays against Michigan Tech University (Oct. 29) and Saginaw Valley State University (Nov. 12). However, both of those games are in Allendale. That means an even greater advantage for GVSU.

Grand Valley is a very good football team and proved it Saturday ... as it had proven it the previous three weeks.

No. 14 Ferris State University figured to have its toughest test of the season with 10th-ranked Miami University coming into Big Rapids to take on the Bulldogs at Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Ferris and Miami slugged it out for two periods of even hockey before the Bulldogs scored twice in the third period, including an empty-net goal to take the 4-2 victory.

Jordie Johnston's power-play goal at 6:19 of the third proved the difference as Eric Alexander scored his second goal of the night, into an empty net, to seal the victory.

The Bulldogs will attempt to move to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association if they can pull off a Saturday night victory over the RedHawks.

It will not be easy, however. Expect Miami to come out playing even more physical to get back on the winning track.

Ferris State University is getting reading or a huge series as the Bulldogs, ranked 14th in the nation, prepare to host 10th-ranked Miami University in a two-game series in Big Rapids on Friday and Saturday evening.

The Bulldogs begin Central Collegiate Hockey Association play in tough fashion with one of the nation's premier programs. This will be a great test for the Bulldogs who are undefeated at 4-0 coming into this series.

One of the most impressive aspects of Ferris' 4-0 start to the campaign has been the defense. The goaltending has been strong led by veteran Taylor Nelson (pictured) and freshman C.J. Motte. Nelson was expected to be ready to step in and Motte has opened a lot of eyes with his strong early play for the Bulldogs.

The defense has been tough and has quieted some critics who feared the loss of Zach Redmond might be too much to handle. Of course, some of those same critics said the same thing about losing Pat Nagle in goal. Ferris, however, has proven to be a resilient program as guys have stepped up to fill in those big skates.

A lot of people are wondering if this is the year that Ferris State University gets that first win over Grand Valley State University in football since 1999.

It has been a long time and a lot of years of frustration as the Bulldogs have struggled to find that ultimate success against the Lakers.

At this point of the season, Ferris and Grand Valley are playing solid football and feeling confident about their chances to knock off the Lakers at Lubbers Stadium - one of the toughest facilities in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to play in for visitors. The

Bulldogs will get their shot on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Allendale.

Ferris needs to get its passing game going pretty well. The Bulldogs have to test the secondary of the Lakers. To do that, however, Ferris will need to provide Tom Schneider with the protection he needs to complete those passes.

Defensively, the Bulldogs will need to put the pressure on the GVSU offensive line and quarterback Heath Parling. That can be easier said than done as the Lakers typically do a good job of protecting the quarterback. Also, GVSU boasts a strong running game as well with Norman Shuford and Hersey Jackson. Ferris' front seven will be challenged by that offensive line and a strong rushing offense.

The team still has a lot to play for, including alumni, and now is the time to step it up as it will be playing in front of members of the 1999 team that will be in town celebrating that last conference championship.

When a team begins the season you sometimes don't know what to expect. The Bulldogs of head coach Bob Daniels, however, looked solid as they went on the road to New York and performed well with a season-opening, non-conference sweep.

The Bulldogs defeated the Saints 4-2 on Friday and then 5-1 on Saturday before it returns to Big Rapids and prepares to host RPI this weekend as

part of homecoming activities at Ferris.

FINDLAY, Ohio - It was a rough day of football for Ferris State University. The host Oilers jumped out to a 22-0 lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs rallied for 35 second-half points, but it was not enough as the University of Findlay scored a 43-35 win over Ferris at Donnell Stadium in Findlay, Ohio.

With the loss the Bulldogs drop to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.

Ferris struggled to hold down the running game of Findlay most of the game. In the first half, it was a challenge for the Bulldogs of head coach Jeff Pierce as turnovers, missed tackles and penalties plagued the team from start to finish.

Ferris State University is going to be in for a challenge this afternoon as it prepares to take on what looks, by most accounts, to be a much-improved Findlay team this afternoon in football action from Donnell Stadium in Findlay, Ohio.

The Bulldogs of head coach Jeff Pierce are 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Oilers are 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC.

UF is coming off a 45-28 loss last weekend at Indianapolis while Ferris is coming off of a 38-14 win against Lake Erie College.

This should be a good challenge for the Bulldogs on the road. We will find out a lot about how Ferris handles a solid and well-coached team on the road.

Ferris State University had better be ready to perform this weekend when it hosts Lake Erie College in league action at 7 p.m. at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs are off to a nice start this season with a 3-1 overall record that includes 2-1 in league action so far. Ferris will work to keep the momentum going as it hosts the Storm at Top Taggart Field.

The Storm is 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the GLIAC, but that does not tell the whole story. Lake Erie has played a tough schedule since it opened the season on Sept. 1 with a 13-10 victory over Gannon University. The Storm has dropped a 41-10 decision to Michigan Tech University, on Sept. 10; a 35-20 game to Saginaw Valley State University, on Sept. 17; and a 35-26 contest to Hillsdale College, on Sept. 24.

So, Lake Erie has played some tough competition as it heads to Big Rapids for this weekend's contest.

This team has a solid dual-threat quarterback in Sean Bedevelsky, who has 127 yards rushing this season with three touchdowns and has passed for 513 yards as its leader. He is capable of breaking off some big plays so the Bulldogs will have to account for him.

COLLEGE HOCKEY: Ferris Picked Ninth By Coaches; Seventh By Media In Preseason CCHA Poll

There will not be too many Central Collegiate Hockey Association polls left for Ferris State University.

The 2011-12 preseason coaches poll has the Bulldogs picked ninth with 50 points while the media poll has Ferris picked in a tie for seventh with Northern Michigan University with 425 points. The Bulldogs of head coach Bob Daniels finished the 2010-11 season with a record of 18-16-5 overall en route to a fifth-place finish in the CCHA. Neither the coaches nor the media are optimistic that Ferris can duplicate that high of a finish during the 2011-12 campaign.

As we have come to realize in the CCHA, however, you never know until you know with how things are going to play out. There is always a surprise team or two (sometimes good and sometimes bad).
